So what did I end up doing all day? I drove. I drove for a really long time. About 560 miles, all told.
Most of that trip was through Tennessee, a state that seemed to never end. Turns out that's what happens when you drive through a long state like that diagonally.
Currently I'm in Gurdon, Arkansas. I'm about 60 miles from the Texas border and 365 miles from Austin. Assuming no unforeseen distractions: I should reach my destination tomorrow, and then the real work begins.
This is the first post I've written with an audience, as there are about 10-15 deer standing in a field in front of me. It's too dark to get a good picture, but you know what deer look like already, and if not, feel free to Google it. I'm not the Internet police; it's really none of my concern.
Alisa asked on Facebook about what I've been listening to on my drive. I actually meant to touch on that yesterday, so thanks for the reminder Alisa.
I've tried to mix it up between podcasts, music, and audiobooks. Whenever I start to lose focus I switch to something new.
Surprisingly, music has been my least listened to format for the last few days. I listened to the newest MuteMath album, "Vitals" a bit on the first day, and all the way through once on day two. It's nice and upbeat(and quite disco inspired) which has been good for when the eyelids start to feel a tad heavy and I'm watching for the next rest area. I actually didn't end up listening to any music at all today, which is odd for me.
On the podcast front, I've been working my way through the back-catalogue of "The Flophouse", a comedy podcast about bad movies. Additionally, today I listened to a few hours of "Hello Internet", a brainy podcast about smart people stuff. You probably wouldn't like it. <_<
The bulk of my aural intake has actually been audiobooks. I stocked up on a few series before I left and have been working on Brandon Sanderson's "Mistborn" series first. I actually started listening before I even left and was already on the beginning of book five by the time I left Jersey. I finished book six today(and am now current with the series, minus a novella not available as an audiobook).
I've always told people that I disliked medieval fantasy, but I'm starting to realize that isn't true. I don't dislike medieval fantasy, Lord of the Rings is just really boring and a lot of popular fantasy apes it pretty heavily. Mistborn, however, has been a ton of fun. I prefer the second half of the series(which takes place hundreds of years later and is more of a post-western) but all of it has been great. I'd love to turn it into a TV series someday. The writing is very cinematic and would translate well.
Anyway, even with moving into the Central Time zone, it's still nearly 3AM and I'm getting quite tired. So sleep tight, and don't worry about that dark figure lurking in the shadow of your open closet door. I'm sure it's just your imagination, or like, a serial hugger, or something.
Tomorrow: Austin!
(I crossed, and far exceeded, the thousand mile mark on this trip today. I'd love to show a picture of that, but apparently it rolls over to just display "0.0" because Saturn loves to ruin my excitement).
